Industrial Wastewater Treatment

Wastewater treatment is a vital process for protecting our public health, preventing pollution, and allowing water to be repurposed for industrial use. Many Owners and OEM Technology providers rely on Tate Metalworks’ expertise and the quality of our field-erected API tanks and shop-fabricated ASME Section VIII Pressure Vessels for storing their process water and effluent treatment equipment.

What is Process Water Treatment?

Process water treatment conditions the water used in industrial or chemical processes so it can be recycled for use again. Process water has various purposes within a facility such as cooling, heating, manufacturing, rinsing, or chemical reactions.

Why treat Process Water?

The treatment of process water ensures the water won’t scale, corrode, ruin equipment, or interfere with product quality by:

  • Preventing scaling in boilers and heat exchangers
  • Avoiding corrosion in piping and metal parts
  • Controlling microbial growth (especially in cooling towers)
  • Meeting quality standards for manufacturing or rinsing
  • Maximizing equipment lifespan and efficiency

Process Water Treatment Stages

A comprehensive approach is required to treat water for specific industrial uses:

  • Pre-Treatment: Removes suspended solids, brackish, and large particles that can clog or damage downstream systems
  • Softening: Removes hardness
  • Deaeration or Degasification: Removes oxygen and CO₂ that cause corrosion
  • Demineralization/Deionization (DI): Removes dissolved ions for ultra-pure water (i.e. in power plants or electronics manufacturing) using ion exchange resins, Reverse Osmosis (RO), or Electrodeionization (EDI).
  • Disinfection: Used if water needs to be free from biological contaminants
  • pH Adjustment & Chemical Conditioning: Prevents corrosion and scaling

What is Effluent Treatment?

The effluent treatment process (ETP) is similar to process water treatment but designed specifically to treat wastewater (effluent) used in industrial processes before it is discharged back into the environment or repurposed. This is a critical step for compliance with environmental regulations.
