Petrochemical Storage Solutions

Petrochemicals are the foundation for a wide variety of everyday products, from plastic packaging to synthetic fibers in clothing, fertilizer for crops, and pharmaceuticals. The petrochemical industry transforms raw materials—including ethane, propane, butane, and naphtha sourced from crude oil and natural gas refining—into primary petrochemicals like ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene, and xylene. Tate Metalworks is a trusted partner in this critical industry, providing engineered storage solutions for a diverse range of raw materials, primary petrochemicals, and finished products.

Key Processes in Petrochemical Production

Steam Cracking (for olefins: ethylene, propylene, butadiene):

This process involves using steam to rapidly heat feedstocks like ethane, propane, butane, or naphtha to high temperatures (750–900°C). This breaks down large hydrocarbon molecules into smaller, valuable products, including:

  • Ethylene—A crucial building block for polyethylene and PVC
  • Propylene—Used in the production of polypropylene, acrylonitrile, and other important chemicals
  • Butadiene—A key component of synthetic rubber

Catalytic Reforming (for aromatics: benzene, toluene, xylene):

Naphtha, derived from crude oil distillation, is heated with hydrogen and passed over a catalyst, like platinum, to rearrange the hydrocarbon molecules and form aromatic hydrocarbons, including:

  • Benzene—Used in the production of styrene, nylon, and detergents
  • Toluene—Utilized as a solvent and in explosives and other chemicals
  • Xylene—A precursor to PET plastics and synthetic fibers

Separation and Purification:

Following cracking and reforming, a mixture of chemicals is separated and purified to ensure the individual petrochemicals meet the required purity standards for further processing.

Engineered Petrochemical Storage Solutions

Tate Metalworks provides a comprehensive suite of storage solutions tailored to the specific needs of the petrochemical industry.

Storage of Liquid Petrochemicals

We offer a range of tank designs for the safe and efficient storage of liquid petrochemicals, such as benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylene glycol, and naphtha.

  • Atmospheric Storage Tanks—Ideal for less volatile liquids like xylene and toluene, providing reliable and cost-effective storage
  • Fixed Roof Tanks—Designed for stable liquids, offering protection from the elements
  • Floating Roof Tanks—Used to enhance safety and minimize vapor loss with volatile liquids
  • Pressurized Tanks—Engineered to prevent evaporation and pressure build-up for storing more volatile or low-boiling liquids like ethylene and propylene
  • Cold Storage Tanks—Specialized, insulated tanks designed for storage for products like liquid Ammonia to maintain low temperatures and keep them in a liquid state

Storage of Gaseous Petrochemicals

For gases like ethylene, propylene, butadiene, and hydrogen, Tate Metalworks offers robust storage tanks, including:

  • Bullet Tanks—Thick-walled, cylindrical or spherical tanks designed to safely contain compressed gases at high pressures
  • Cryogenic Tanks—Double walled  insulated tanks capable of storing liquefied gases at extremely low temperatures, such as Liquid Nitrogen (LNG), Liquid Hydrogen (LH2) and liquid ethylene

Storage of Solid Petrochemicals

We also fabricate and erect reliable silos and hoppers for the storage of solid petrochemical products like plastic pellets, fertilizers, and resins.
