Position Overview
We are seeking an Estimator to support engineering and sales in quoting business for custom storage tanks. The Estimator is responsible for reviewing engineering specifications and proposals to calculate the total cost of custom structural steel projects. The Estimator will analyze materials, labor, time and equipment, prepare detailed bid packages, and collaborate with project managers and engineering to confirm scope and pricing. The Estimator will communicate with vendors and customers to obtain pricing, clarify project details and support timely, competitive bids.
What You’ll Do
- Perform basic API 650 and API 620 tank design calculations, using standard spreadsheet designs, required for estimating purposes.
- Develop detailed cost estimates for shop-fabricated and field-erected API storage tanks that include all material, labor, freight and subcontracts.
- Prepare estimates for API 653 repair projects and modifications.
- Review customer inquiries, specifications, drawings, and bid documents to determine project scope.
- Perform quantity takeoffs for plate, structural steel, piping, internals, coatings, and associated materials.
- Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotations.
- Prepare detailed project cost summaries and estimate packages for management review.
- Coordinate with the sales team to clarify customer requirements and develop competitive bid strategies.
- Interface with project managers, engineering, drafting, shop personnel, and construction personnel.
- Review historical project data and lessons learned to improve estimate accuracy.
- Maintain estimating databases, labor factors, and pricing information.
- Assist with risk identification and contingency development during the proposal phase.
- Generate customer proposals, quotations, and supporting commercial documentation.
- Support project handoff activities by communicating estimate assumptions and commercial considerations.
- Review and check API designs and estimates that have been prepared by peers.
- Support continuous improvement efforts related to estimating processes, procedures, and tools.
- Adhere to company safety standards, quality requirements, and customer specifications in all estimating activities.

Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related technical field preferred.
- Knowledge of an experience in steel fabrication, steel plate construction, or industrial field services preferred.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Experience with API 650, API 620 and API 653 codes and standards is a plus.

- Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy in calculations and documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines simultaneously.
- Sense of urgency in responding to sales bids and customer needs.
- Desire to learn, improve, and adapt to change and continuous improvement.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
